Curriculum Letter

Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to the new term’s curriculum letter.
We hope this is going to be an exciting term with lots of new learning opportunities for everyone.
Our topic this term is, ‘The Maya’. We will be exploring where and when this civilisation developed and what happened to it. We will also be comparing the period when the Maya flourished with what was happening in Britain at that time.

In Geography, we will be investigating the Americas and looking at how climate affects both animal and human populations. This links well with our Science, where we will be focussing on, ‘The Circle of Life.’ We will be looking at how different plants and animals are adapted for the environment in which they live and how their existence is often dependent upon other plants and animals.

In Art and Design, we will be looking at how the Maya used technology and making models of temples and other buildings found in their civilisation.
We will be collecting and analysing data as well as continuing to develop our programming skills. We will also be using IT to develop our communication skills including the use of stop motion animation.
We will be learning about athletics and striking / fielding games in PE. Full outdoor PE kit will be required for both sessions; it is advisable that PE kit stays in school from Monday to Friday.

In English our main focus will be on the work of Robert Louis Stevenson, particularly Treasure Island.
Homework will be published on Edmodo and on our blog http://richmond5s.blogspot.co.uk. During the week, the children are given the opportunity to print any resources and access any online content they may need to complete their homework.
We will be visiting several secondary schools during the second half of term to allow the children to experience at first hand some of the facilities offered by each school. There will also be 11+ practice tests towards the end of the year.
